How to choose the perfect running shoes?

Published on 10 March 2026 | By 365 Sports

Finding the right running shoe can be quite a challenge. Whether you are just starting out with your first kilometers or training for a marathon, your shoes are your most important tool. The right shoe prevents injuries and ensures you keep running with pleasure. But what exactly should you look out for?

1. Your gait: Neutral or overpronation?

The way your foot lands and rolls determines to a large extent what type of shoe you need. Does your foot land nicely straight and do you distribute the pressure evenly? Then you need a neutral shoe. However, does your ankle tilt inward during landing? We call that overpronation. In that case, you need a shoe with a support block (antipronation) to relieve your knees and ankles.

"The wrong shoes are the cause of over 70% of beginner running injuries. Invest in the right foundation, and the rest will follow naturally."

2. How much cushioning do you need?

Cushioning absorbs the impacts that your joints have to endure. Do you mainly run long, steady runs on hard asphalt? Then a shoe with maximum cushioning is wonderfully comfortable. Are you looking for speed for interval training or races? Then choose a lighter shoe with a bit less cushioning, so you maintain more 'ground feel' and push-off power.

3. The importance of the right size

During running, your feet expand because they get warm and receive more blood flow. Therefore, always buy running shoes a size (or sometimes even a size and a half) larger than your daily sneakers. Make sure you still have about a thumb's width of space at the front when standing.
